By now most of us know about single use water bottles, but buttons have been hiding literally under our noses.
Not only are they attached to nearly everyone all the time - there is a massive upward trend in button crafts. Either way they eventually end up in a land fill where for 500 years, they will leak poison into the environment. They also break into micro pieces that will be eaten by the last of our surviving, once adorable, on the road to becoming mythical - sea creatures.

What was so wrong with macaroni?
The size of the problem:
- Start with the toxin leaking buttons already on the earth - about one million tons for each 20 years
- Add those produced annually: 25 billion buttons
- Adjust for the toxins created while they are manufactured
- Add the fossil fuels burned in shipping from China and Japan
- Multiply each button by the 500 years it will leak poisons until it fully degrades
- Multiply year after year after decade after decade
The fit of a garment can cause plastic buttons to leak toxins while you're wearing them.
Since I found out that they leak toxins as we wear them: they give me the horror movie creeps. No wonder everyone's gotten so angry and crazy - we're constantly being poisoned! Turns out there are massive amounts of toxins in some of our clothes. These toxins affect our minds and our health. We ate off of lead plates until the mid 1900's while our children got brain damage, lowered IQ's, behavioral issues and other permanent health problems. We're doing the same thing right now, not just with buttons, but with all of the uncontrolled, unknown toxins in our lives. We are eating off of lead plates. Imagine how much smarter, happier and healthier we could be without all the toxins.

Check Out These Buttons (COTB) has a solution that starts with certain domestic trees. They have a very efficient way of producing oxygen and absorbing carbon. Increasing the demand for these trees will actually improve the atmosphere. After a low carbon production, the net result may actually be carbon negative. No plastic nor resin can make this claim: at best they might only "hurt less".
